Antique Donegal Rug, Ireland, Late 19th Century - While antique Donegal carpets often reflect Medieval Irish and Art Nouveau styles, this magnificent example takes inspiration from classical Persian design, especially Kerman vase carpets. Here swaying vines with richly detailed palmettes in shades gold and apricot all repeat across a spacious soft aubergine field. The border consists of rosettes in alternation with floral bouquets against an apricot ground. While the design itself is clearly Persia, one may detect a certain Irish folk art quality in the brisk, bold drawing, just as the palette recalls Medieval Irish ornamental manuscript painting.

Antique Donegal Rug, Ireland, Circa 1900 - The border, if one can describe as such, of this extraordinary antique Donegal carpet, consists of shamrock-like palmettes jutting in repetition into the space of the field. More an open work frame than a border, it defies and transcends the traditional notions of carpet design. The field, in contrast is simple, yielding pride of place to the frame, with only a simple pattern of staggered fleurons on a soft green ground. Just as the field is penetrated by the frame, the fame itself in penetrated by small insets at the outer edge. The soft golds and browns in the frame provide a gentle contrast to the green field within this remarkably constrained palette.

Antique Donegal Rug, Ireland, Early 20th Century - Antique Donegal carpets of Ireland are known for their traditional Celtic designs and for adaptations of Oriental rugs as well. This example is more unusual, reflecting what was then the cutting-edge movement of European decorative arts - Art Nouveau. The rich, dramatic border displays the classic water lily or jellyfish design in this style with its sinuous interlacing, plant and animal forms evoking the gentle pulse of natural life. The border with its shades of rich lavender, pale pink, apricot and magenta provides a window-like frame for the open soft green field, whose variegated tones suggest deep, mystic space.

Antique Donegal Rug, Ireland, Circa 1900 - A classical Persian design of palmettes and cloudband vinescrolls floats gracefully across the open persimmon ground of this elegant and richly decorative antique Irish carpet. A similar pattern of palmette vines repeats though the teal ground border. Though based on oriental patterns, the drawing and the coloration - especially the lovely mixture of persimmon, teal, and goldenrod tones are distinctly Irish recalling the taste of contemporary arts and crafts rugs and textiles.

Antique Irish Rug 40419, European Rug, England, Circa 1900 - Irish carpets hold an important place in the long history of Ireland adaptations of oriental rugs. This one is remarkable in its emulation of classic Polonaise carpets, a Persian type once thought to have been made in Poland. The medallion design, rich border, and the sinuous, flame-like drawing evokes the qualities of the classic original, but with a soft, buttery palette more reminiscent of Oushak carpets. Eminently decorative and collectible as well, this piece has all the qualities desirable in a fine antique carpet.

Antique Irish Rug, Ireland, Circa 1900 - While the weave and soft palette of this lovely carpet identify it as an antique Irish piece, the ornamental details are entirely Oriental, although rendered with a European touch. The magnificent palmette border is classically Persian, as are the delicate little flowers of the field. Still the arrangement of the field as a scatter of unconnected blossoms is an Irish feature. Antique Irish Rug, Ireland, Circa 1900 - While the scroll design in the field of this unusual antique Irish carpet goes back to Renaissance and late Medieval European ornament, the exploding lotus and cartouche border is classically Oriental, reflecting the designs of the great Safavid carpets of Persia. The overall composition is striking, especially in the way that the large forms of the border impinge upon the small, finer forms and rhythms of the field. A remarkable melding of East and West.

Antique Donegal Rug, Ireland, Early 20th Century - Classically styled, this outstanding antique Irish rug from the famous weaving city of Donegal features understated floral borders drawn with graceful sweeping curves that are synonymous with the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts design movements. Undulating foliage, delicately colored lilies, scalloped botanical motifs and recurving leaflets with carefully woven shadows create an unending border with strategically placed elements that perform precise functions in the well-balanced pattern using their stately colors and eye-catching lines. The beautifully composed floral borders create an understated frame that highlights the stylish monochromatic background while complementing the austere dark taupe field with a varied selection of muted burgundy red leaflets, oxidized bronze motifs, lapis blue foliage and creamy pink lily blossoms. This classical European carpet created in the Irish weaving capital of Donegal exemplifies the delicate colors, graceful style and formal composition that make European designs so timeless, elegant and enduring.

Antique Hooked American Rug 43605 European Rug, Europe, Circa 1900 - While antique American hooked rugs and carpets are famed for their homey charm as a folk art genre, this extraordinary example competes with the sophisticated elegance of French Aubusson and Savonnerie carpets. A cameo medallion on soft tan surrounded by Neo-classical acanthus vinescrolls is enclosed yet again by a subtle diamond lattice on slightly darker tan. An acanthus vinescroll border with scalloped corners on a pale cocoa ground frames the field as if it were a painting. Much of the decorative beauty of this carpet resides in the lustrous velvety quality of the wool and in the sparing effect of pastel reds and greens amidst the varied shades of tan.

Antique Hooked Rug, America, Late 19th Century - While antique American hooked rugs are generally known for their na??ve folksy charm., this lovely example takes inspiration from the more sophisticated Axminster and Aubusson rugs that were being made in Britain and France at this time. Here intersecting borders and circles create a large grid whose compartments are filled with naturalistic floral sprays or bouquets, and with cruciform scroll designs in the carious circular nodules of the grid. The pastel palette set on a soft ivory ground is classic Aubusson, as is the style of the floral sprays. Nonetheless, a distinctly American folk art charm still comes through the design, however subtly.

Antique Hooked American Rug 2030 Aubusson Carpet, America, Late 19th Century - While the technique and somewhat quaint drawing of this outstanding antique hooked rug betray the distinctive charm of American folk art, the medallion-cartouche design and the soft ivory golden coloration are clearly derived from contemporary French Aubusson and Savonnerie carpets. This piece clearly represents a desire to produce something more cosmopolitan, formal, and stately than the usual American hooked rugs, and this is also evident in the exceptionally large scale or size of the piece. As such it represents a genuinely rare and distinctive example within this genre.

Antique Hooked Rug, America, Circa 1900 - While antique American hooked rugs are generally appreciated for their homey charm, this unusual example is inspired by the grace and elegance of French Aubusson and Savonnerie carpets. Here the design consists of floating medallion-like sprays or bouquets of flowers in pastel tones set against cool cream ground. The staggered arrangement of this allover repeat design is subtle, like the soft palette, and both recall the decorative sweetness of the French forerunners. The borderless composition adds a subtly modern touch.

Antique Hooked Rug, America, Circa 1900 - Antique American hooked rugs tend to evoke the image of traditional folk arts, but this exciting example is strikingly modern. Consisting of irregular multi-colored concentric circles on a light cocoa ground, this long rug or runner evokes the effect of Venetian millefiori glass or the mosaic architectural decoration of Antonio Gaudi. Versatility is highly desirable in a rug. This one would nicely complement a Windsor chair or streamlined modern furniture.

Antique Hooked AMerican Rug 2713
America, Late 19th Century - A delicate and well-spaced pattern of pointed rosettes in staggered rows repeats against the pale tan ground of this exceptional antique American hooked rug. A series of thin stripes comprise the simple border system. The elegant design is unusual within the more homey repertory of hooked rugs. It relates more to American applique quilts, although the elegant drawing is also reminiscent of French Aubusson tapestry rugs.
